Kathmandu Valley is also known as city of temples. Over 2000 temples in Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu valley is also one of the oldest cities in the world.
Few decades ago, there was no electricity, no water pipeline, no drainage system. And at that time stone spouts is the only medium to fetch water inside the house in Kathmandu valley. At that time, there was not concrete urbanization inside the valley and the population is also very low as well.
The rain water is collected inside the earth and it directly comes as a pure drinking water from stone spout. Rain water harvesting system concept is fully applied in stone spouts.
Gradually Kathmandu city becomes crowded with population growth and migration of people from all over Nepal and India. The brick road is replaced by concrete roads and old houses made from soil, bricks and woods are replaced by concrete houses with aluminum doors and windows. There is no place for rain water to store. When it rains, rain water flows from high altitude to low altitude only. As a result of high demand, high consumption and less supply of water, the water level in the well as well as stone spout also decreases or we can say stone spouts stops to supply water.
Many households are still found to be washing cloths under these stone spouts. Fetching water in Gagri is replaced by plastic jars. Modernization occurs with less development in Nepal. People don’t want to stay in queue to fill water. Water pipe everywhere. But Nepal government can’t quench the thirst of people residing at Kathmandu Valley.
Huge motors are used to pull water and fill water reservoirs in the houses of Kathmandu Valley. Houses are made with water reservoirs which became dharap in earthquake, April 25, 2015 AD. After devastating earthquake of 25th April, 2015 many historical houses, ancient templeas were damaged. Many local people became homeless. They built houses in their fertile agricultural land. The land price increase more than four times since the quake while preparing this article. The historic place is turning into a concrete structures. People migrating from outside valley also purchased land and settle in Kahmandu Valley. So scarcity or shortage of water in this area.
These beautiful monuments stone spouts are now declining in Kathmandu Valley. The assets of the country should be preserved. Many tourist came/visit Nepal to see the preserved beauty of the world heritage sites of Nepal in which stone spouts is also the searched topic for the tourists.
Nepal government should pay attention in urbanization of the valley and doing urbanization in a way by preserving these historical evidences. These stone spouts are gahana/aabhusans of our country.
