Village leather or naturally tanned leather is made in Nepal by marginalized communities. Their caste includes Sarki, Bayalkoti, Bogati, Mijar, Ramtel, Surkheti, Bisunkhe, and Roka. The communities are mostly uneducated. Present generation is going to school and most of them left school after primary level education. Their generation spend their lives sewing shoes, bags, jackets. They make naturally tanned leather from the skin of dead cow, buffalo, ox and goat. Naturally tanned leather goods include bags, purse, backpacks, wallets, belts etc. Leather tanning process is very old process. We will discuss about the leather tanning process in our coming blogs. The leather is available in two color – tan color (natural) and black color. The products are very strong very beautiful. In cold countries and wet places, these leather goods are attacked by fungus and the only way to preserve these leather goods is by basking them under direct sunlight to use lifelong. The village leather are expensive as the only source of income for marginalized community for operating their household expenditures are by selling leather goods after agriculture. The profit from selling village leather goods will be used in child-education program for marginalized community. imartisan.org had been organized by the group of professionals with very limited resources. The main aim of the organization is to provide market opportunities to help people get work to change their lifestyles. We do not promote donations. We always seek customer order for our artisans.
