Nepal is one of the least developed countries in the world, with an economy that is largely based on agricultural production and indigenous technologies. As a result, about a third of its population is mostly from rural and semi-urban communities live in absolute poverty with limited access to basic amenities, livelihood and educational opportunities. 24% people are under poverty line in Nepal. So, poverty is the main challenge for the Nepal.
imartisan is conducting different training programs to uneducated, marginalized, widowed, destitute women in skill generating to make handicraft production that foster in income generation to the family. One of the popular handicraft production jobs for women in Nepal is knitting. Both literate and illiterate women are engaged in this field. Women of Nepal are knitting for their children and families since long time. Nepali women make the traditional knitwear designs they learnt from their seniors. These days they are also knitting with western motifs using the beautiful range of fashionable colors and designs.
Women suffer from social, cultural and political biases. Traditionally, women’s roles are confined to household chores and farming activities, which, in general engage them for a longer hours than men (14-16 hours compared to men’s 7-9 hours a day) each day. Fetching water, cooking food, washing utensils, agricultural works, taking care of babies and old people in the families works etc are the tasks to be completed by women that are not monetized. In addition compared to male, women have limited access to educational and employment opportunities. Still largely the households and society directly and indirectly deny or discourage women’s role as decision maker. To cope up with the following issues, we introduced work from Home (WFH) program targeting these women artisans. They visit our office, learn required knitting skills from our knitting experts, take required raw materials (wool), go home and do knitting works and come back to office with finished products. Quality checking (Q.C) is done in knitwear products. Then payments and incentives are calculated accordingly.
Working with us has changed their lives. The payments and incentives they received from knitting improve income level which ultimately helps to empower themselves and their family.
They are financially independent so they don’t have to become victims of discrimination in the society and even in their family. They don’t have to ask for help from their husband or father in laws.
WFH movement may be helpful to pull them out from those situations. Benefit of knitwear production work is that it allows women artisans the opportunity to gain a decent wage working from home while still having freedom for other responsibilities important to them such as caring for children and families. Furthermore, they are also participating in major decision making process in the family.
